     Home Remedies

Hello Mr. Write, I'm a high school student from Maine, and I am doing a science fair project regarding rust, and the most efficient way to remove it from metal (Iron of course ) I was just wondering, if you have the time of course, if you could tell me some chemicals that can be used to remove rust. The formulas don't have to be from the products you sell, but just the general chemicals that can remove rust. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Sincerely, Aaron Mascuņana

The Tinman Respondeth:

Aaron, Acids are good. Lemon juice/Citric acid cleans gently. Coca Cola will remove rust stains from fabrics. Iron removers for fabrics-check hardware stores and read labels. Phosphoric acid-25% cleans steel nice. Eats it up in days. Muriatic acid-eats up concrete. Disappears steel in hours. Strong acids- sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, aqua regia -- all disappear steel in a foamy hissing fuming noxious cloud in seconds when hot or a little longer if cold. Kent
