Gas Welding Birmabright

Gas Welding Birmabright

Home > Education > Metalworking FAQs > Welding FAQs > Gas Welding Birmabright

Is it possible to gas weld the Birmabright, the proprietary alloy used in Land Rover bodies. This alloy is 17% magnesium, mainly Aluminum, with traces of other elements. What welding rod should be used to gas weld this material. Is a victor 000 tip small enough to weld this .040 thick material?

Thank You
Rich

The Tinman Respondeth:

Rich,

I have done a lot of them. And Brit motorcycles. And have gotten perfect color match on polished parts.

Use 5356 rod, and a Victor "0" tip. What experience do you have? as just plunging in can be very entertaining for spectators.
