Welding, Brazing, Soldering Workshop

Being able to solder, braze, and weld effectively with the O/A torch is one of the most useful skills in the metal shop. And while many metalworkers are familiar with simple soldering done with a torch, often they do not realize that in many cases, welding thin sheet metal is more appropriately done with the oxy-acetylene torch. It’s cheaper and faster, and often has less distortion. This course focuses on teaching you to be able to distinguish when to use which technique, and how to feel confident using an O/A torch for soldering, brazing, and welding.

Day 1 – Soldering
This hands-on course begins with learning to safely set up bottles, regulators, and torch, with leak testing. We will then define and explore the differences between soldering and welding and techniques for each. Students will spend several hours soldering steel, copper, galvanized, and aluminum for repairs, construction, and fabrication. Instruction will cover joint designs, tensile strength, and hardnesses.

Day 2 – Brazing
The second day introduces steel brazing steel sheet at temperatures just above those for soldering aluminum. We will also braze aluminum, copper and brass to themselves and to each other. Instruction will cover joint designs, tensile strength, and hardnesses.

Day 3 – Welding Aluminum and Steel
The last day covers welding 3003 aluminum alloy with flange welds in .050” thickness, transitioning to butt joints later, for the more advanced welders. We’ll also weld 5052 and 6061 and discuss their proper applications. Student will also butt weld mild steel sheet. We cover cleanliness, regulator pressure settings, tip choices, flux choices, and proper flux mixing, along with clean-up for primer and paint coats. Also included are distortion remedies and planishing to a polished finish. For advanced students, steel tube joints will be available, along with some 4130 chromoly alloy. We also cover filler metals, joint designs, tip selection, and torch options.

Kent White, your instructor, will guide your hands and minds to help you get a feel for welding with the humble torch. Some interesting demos may be incorporated, including welding with the cutting torch, and writing your name in the air.

Cost: $1,200. (Includes light breakfast, full lunch, materials & supplies)

Pre-req: Sincere interest in metalworking / torch welding and ability to work safely in a shop environment.
